How to profile data

One of the first steps in transforming a dataset into something useful is profiling the data to see what you currently have. For example:

• is each column a consistent type: text, date, numeric, boolean?
• are there any statistical outliers?
• are there invalid values (e.g. ‘NaN’ where a numeric is expected)?
• do all the values make sense (e.g. a negative age or weight value might not make much sense)?
• are dates formatted correctly?
• are there are missing values?
• are there duplicates in columns where there shouldn’t be (e.g. ID columns)
