32 vs 64 bit applications

32 vs 64 bit applications

The Windows operating system is gradually transitioning from a 32 bit operating system to a 64 bit operating system. Most people are now using 64 bit versions of Windows.

Previously the Windows version of Easy Data Transform was a 32 bit application. This allowed it to run on both 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows, but the amount of memory was limited to the 4GB maximum that can be addressed by a 32 bit program (even if your computer has >4GB of memory). In reality this means that you might be able to handle datasets with a million data values (e.g. 100k rows x 10 columns). But datasets much bigger than this were likely to cause Easy Data Transform to run out of memory.

From v1.6.0 Easy Data Transform is now available in both 32 and 64 bit versions for Windows. The Windows installer contains both, and the appropriate version will be installed for your operating system. The 64 bit version can address an effectively unlimited address space. This means that you should be able to process datasets with more than a million of rows without running out of memory. It has also increased the size of the installer by almost double!

Apple switched macOS to 64 bit only some years ago, so the Mac version of Easy Data Transform has always been 64 bit.

Performance

Easy Data Transform is written in C++ and uses hashing and reference counting for optimal performance. Consequently it is fast. On our Windows PC the 64 bit version of Easy Data Transform is able to join two 100k row datasets in less than 0.2 seconds and join two million row datasets in less than 5.5 seconds.

Join benchmark

The performance on our iMac is similar.

  Join 2 cols x 100k rows to 4 cols x 100k rows Join 14 cols x 1 million rows to 14 cols x 1 million rows
3.6GHz AMD Ryzen 7 PC (16GB RAM) 0.177 seconds 5.489 seconds
3.5GHz Core i5 iMac (16GB RAM) 0.214 seconds 6.509 seconds

Feedback

Many of the improvements in this release came from customer feedback. If you have any suggestions for ways in which you would like to see Easy Data Transform improved, then please email us.
